Who we are & why we’re doing this

Wayne Lin - Founder (wayne@ecolightbulbs.org)
Ever since I was a child I’ve been passionate about saving the environment and living in a way that preserves our environment for future generations. In recent years more and more news has come out about the dangers of global warming and how we are destroying the environment at an unprecedented pace. I’ve decided that living my personal life in a way that’s friendly to the environment is not enough, and that I should try... to the best of my ability to help preserve our planet through larger scale efforts.

Global warming comes down to the creation of greenhouse gases. There are two ways to reduce this impact. Make energy more efficiently (i.e., solar panels, windpower, cleaner burning fuels, etc..) or use less energy. I am focusing on the latter and working on ways to reduce overall energy consumption, specifically by promoting the adoption and use of compact fluorescent light bulbs.

The plan is to acquire the bulbs as cheaply as possible and distribute them at as low of a cost as possible to as many people as possible. I believe that increasing usage and adoption of the bulbs will hopefully spur the market to increase production of these light bulbs, driving down costs. Eventually our hope is that adoption and use of these bulbs is so widespread that our organization is no longer needed.

As for my day job, I work at Google in Mountain View, CA as a product manager building advertising products. I thought that I’d try to leverage some of the things I’ve learned during my time at Google to build a not-for-profit business that could help change how people light their homes.

"Reduce Reuse Recycle" -- three simple words that embody so much meaning. I still remember when I first learned this green-friendly mantra in elementary school, and being struck by how simple yet impactful it was. It doesn't take a lot for an individual to become conscious about the impact he or she has on the planet, but to inspire that same individual to do something about it -- that's a whole other story. You have to keep the message simple, and make it easy to implement on a daily basis.

Fast forward a couple of decades, and Wayne approaches me with his idea for ecoLightbulbs. I was once again struck by how simple yet impactful his idea was, and excited that I, too, could help spread the word about how we can all make a difference. As a marketer, you often don't get the luxury of choosing the products you sell or promote. ecoLightbulbs is my way of inspiring others to do something about climate change, in the best way I know how -- through marketing. And in case you didn't get it: the product and the message is simple -- you can help save the planet, too -- one light bulb at a time. :-)

During the day, you can find me doing product marketing at Google. Or you can email me at vivian@ecolightbulbs.org.
